Handling Difficult Conversations
It is always challenging to raise an issue with a member of your team. So often this is avoided until the situation has grown into a major issue.
- How often is it easier to avoid the issue and hope it will go away?
- Worrying about how to deal with a difficult situation is stressful not only for you but the rest of your team have to cope to. Don't you owe it to yourself and them to sort it out?
If you feel that this reflects your situations, then this one day workshop will enable you to clarify your thoughts, plan how to raise the issue, think of possible reactions from your team member and how to handle them. You will be introduced to a range of simple but effective techniques, enabling you to turn potentially negative interactions with others into a productive, positive experience.
Aim:
Through systematically analysing the situation, gathering the facts, considering reactions, delegates will explore various ways of handling a dificult conversation.
Objectives:
By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:
- Identify the facts leading to the situation
- Use listening and questioning skills to ensure that team members have the opportunity to explain their actions and behaviours
- Use a variety of techniques, including assertiveness, influencing and conversation skills to gain ‘buy-in’ to a message
- Explain how to use positive body language and why they should avoid negative body language in a ‘conflict’ situation, thereby ensuring effective delivery of the required message
- Rationalise own fears in dealing with potentially stressful situations and identify coping strategies
- Develop strategies to overcome conflict in a variety of scenarios
Methods:
The one day workshop will be highly participative and will draw upon delegates’ experience of having difficult conversations within the workplace. Delegates will be able to practice various techniques of overcoming conflict through role play, with tutor guidance and feedback.
